About ISD
MISSION STATEMENT
Indiana Stonewall Democrats (ISD) is the state organization of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender Democrats and their friends. ISD is committed to improving the record of the Democratic Party and educating voters about the vast difference that exists between the two major parties on issues of importance to our communities.
WHAT ARE THE PURPOSES OF THE INDIANA STONEWALL DEMOCRATS?
- Sensitize and educate Democratic candidates and officeholders and the Democratic Party to the issues and concerns of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community.
- Promote the Democratic Party's message of economic justice and social equality in the GLBT community.
- Encourage GLBT participation in the campaigns of Democratic candidates and at all levels of the Democratic Party.
- Elect Democratic candidates to public office by maximizing the Democratic turnout in the GLBT community.
WHO ARE THE MEMBERS OF THE INDIANA STONEWALL DEMOCRATS?
- GLBT activists
- Citizens who want to know what's happening in Indiana politics that could affect the GLBT community
- Any person who identifies as a Democrat and who subscribes to the stated purposes of ISD is eligible for membership. Your dues include membership in the Stonewall Democrats United, a separate organization.
HISTORY OF THE STONEWALL NAME
We take our name from the Stonewall Inn in New York City, the scene of a 1969 confrontation between gay patrons and an intolerant society. It is widely accepted that the equality movement was born here when police raided the gay establishment for allegedly serving liquor illegally. The patrons that June, having had enough harassment took an historic stand against hatred and discrimination. A three-day riot inspired a revolution that has been a rallying point of our community for over a quarter century. MEETINGS
ISD conducts its board of directors meetings on the third Sunday evening of the month starting at 6:30 pm. These meetings are open to ISD members and the public.
